what are the Arenas in certain towns I.E. Ascalon - Guild Wars Forums

Is that the PvP area?

In the Arenas, do you get items and XP as well?

Arenas are for PvP.
You do not get items or experience, you get Faction which can be used to unlock skills/runes/weapon modifications for a PvP only character(One created by selecting PvP at startup).
